This is the first generation of people with a developmental disability who will enjoy living into old age. The research literature and the curricula of the helping professions are only beginning to inform our thinking and care-giving capacity related to aging with a developmental disability. OPADD seeks to engage representatives from both research and the teaching professions to further understanding about aging with a developmental disability. It is important to prepare care-giving professionals with knowledge in the fields of gerontology and developmental disabilities.
Seniors Health Research Transfer Network (SHRTN)
SHRTN is a province-wide knowledge exchange of people involved in seniors’ health care. SHRTN brings together researchers, policymakers and caregivers for oknowledge exchange facilitated by educators, libraries, members of the SHRTN Communities and Practice and the SHRTN champions. By exchanging best practices, caregivers learn from each other and benefit from the latest research. Through collaboration with caregivers, researchers and policy makers are better able to respond to the needs of the field.
SHRTN hosts several Communities of Practice which deal with specific issues related to aging. Learn more about these and the Aging and Developmental Disabilities Community of Practice in which OPADD members are active.
